In art, automatism refers to creating art without conscious thought, accessing material from the unconscious mind as part of the creative process.
The Surrealists embraced automatic drawing as a way to incorporate randomness and the subconscious into their drawings, and to free themselves from artistic conventions and everyday thinking.
In my Art, I incorporated elements of this movement. However, I added a new dimension of using just a ‘Single Joined Line’ to express what is going on in my subconscious mind to canvas. I usually focused on a topic, letting my mind relax completely until it felt free of any thoughts. Then, using a single continuous line I just let my arm move in the direction it felt. Usually the drawing is done very quickly. Then, I observed my line, figuring out where my subconscious carried me. When the image appeared in my mind, I used colours to bring out what I have seen in this process. It is an amazing experience.
